On April 9, attorney Chris Waggener volunteered at “He Got Up,” an outreach event for the homeless at Camping World Stadium, also known as the Citrus Bowl. The event, hosted by the Orlando Serve Foundation, featured a resource fair identifying services, training, employment and job readiness for self-sustainably.
Local government leaders, agencies, business, non-profits and other local organizations provided aide and other resources to those attending. Volunteers provided a variety of services, from haircuts, to mammograms, free lunch, legal services and more.
Waggener gave legal advice at the event, including how to regain one’s driver’s license. The Chief Judge of the 9th Circuit, public defender Bob Wesley and clerks from Orange and Osceola counties hosted a panel on navigating the court system.
Waggener said those with low-come generally don’t think they would ever be able to afford an attorney or legal services.
“Being able to answer some questions has a big impact on their ability to do basic things, like get their license back or avoid being evicted.”
This was the second annual “He Got Up,” event. The Orlando Serve Foundation describes the event as an ongoing public/private collaboration to leverage existing resources to assist families and individuals in need or homeless with a path to self-sustainability.
